It's Thursday again friends and that means another new anti-HEROESHappy

Though Laldera doesn't seem to be a fan of these titles, personally I love this running gagWink

Looking at the titles for the last two comics, I'm now rooting for the next one to be called "Lady Flings the Bleuse".

@Xykeb Zraliv: Ah, okay. I thought you meant plot relevant because you listed the kobold disguised as a goblin as one of the things that bugged you.

When you have to explain your puns, by definition they aren't puns. In other words, not funny.
Leaking Pen - 2012/6/26
xykeb, lets just say that I'm not a fan of Checkov's gun, but instead, Checkov's large mobilized armory!

I'm not saying "meaning" as in having significant bearing on the plot so much as I'm saying "meaning" as in having a purpose in terms of the work as a whole and (more importantly) the audience's reaction to said work. Something doesn't have to be "important", but it should have a point. Even if it doesn't actual "mean" anything in terms of the story, the audience should be able to understand why we are seeing this happen. If a character makes small talk, we can usually infer that it is so we can relate more to the characters. If a character starts acting goofy, we can usually infer that it is to characterize that person. If something is brought up in conversation, we can usually infer what its narrative purpose is, even if we don't necessarily fully understand it. That's the problem I'm having: I don't see the purpose of anything that has been said in the past three strips. I don't see what it adds to the plot, or to the characterization, or to the narrative. I don't see any reason why we should have to pay attention to what's being said, in other words.

All things should have a purpose, even if that purpose IS to keep things from getting predictable and boring. Everything that the characters say should contribute to the experience in some way, even if it's completely irrelevant to the plot. Whether it be telling a joke, bickering with another character, or making an offhand comment, everything should contribute to immersing the audience into the world by telling us something about a character or the situation or the world or a motivation or an idiosyncrasy or maybe just something to make us laugh or smile.

And maybe it's just me, but these past few comics just...haven't done that. I don't get it. I don't know why these people are saying what they're saying. I don't know what the point of the goblins is. I don't know what I'm supposed to take away from all of this. It all feels very pointless to me.

Sorry if what I'm saying is redundant, but I want to make sure I'm getting my point across.

I partially agree with you there. While total realism will usually remove a lot of the fun from a comic, there have to be some realistic things or it will be seen as ridiculous. While stuttering, speaking in odd ways, and going off on tangents would all detract from the quality when they occur in a comic, some of a conversation has to be realistic and natural, or it will seem strange. Sure things should be important, but not everything, as that eventually gets predictable and boring. If everything has meaning, the audience will be able to figure out most of the plot twists early, and that can ruin a work. When some things don't have meaning and some things that most people would overlook and consider irrelevant are important, it's more realistic and it makes plot twists easier to pull off, making the work better in general.

As for that last thing, you do make some good points. I can't really think of a reason why having it more obvious would be bad.

the boots comment is because the rooms getting full of shit from larises flattery

That is looking at it from a real life point of view, though, which is different from a fictional point of view. Yes, discussions like that happen sometimes. But in real life, people also stutter a lot more, or go off on tangents with nothing to do with the plot, or generally speak in odd ways that aren't important. None of these are good things to do in a webcomic, however. In any form of fictional media, there is an explicit expectation for everything to serve some sort of immediately obvious purpose, whether it be foreshadowing, exposition, character development, humor, or what have you. Even if the meaning isn't readily apparent, the audience should at least be able to infer that there IS a meaning. In these past few pages I just...haven't.

As for the thing about Laldera, I would be more willing to believe that if she showed any indication of a deeper meaning to her insults. All it looks like is her being rude because she doesn't like him. It wouldn't be surprising for her to have fumbled in a plan, no, but it's certainly not implied that she had a plan in the first place, either. The audience cannot be expected to infer things that the narrative gives no clear indication of.
Night Templar - 2012/6/24
@Xybeb Zraliv: About your first sentence, that's just how discussions work sometimes.

As for your second sentence, she probably planned to use his hurt feelings to distract him while they enacted an escape plan, and it just might have happened that she failed to judge how he'd react. Considering her apparently pathetic wisdom score, it's really not surprising in my opinion.
Xykeb Zraliv - 2012/6/24
Like I said, though, if they're being set up for later, it needs to be more obvious that they're important. This entire conversation has flitted between a bunch of topics without addressing any of them in any meaningful capacity. The kobold thing was dropped midway through the conversation without even acknowledging why it was relevant or even why, in a storytelling sense, it was brought up at all. The thing about Laris took up less than a single speech bubble before being forgotten for over an entire strip; in fact, the other characters never acknowledged that it had been said at all. It's hard to take any of the topics here seriously because they all feel superfluous and disjointed.

As for Laldera, I got the thing about the strip titles (although to be honest, I also find that insufficiently conveyed; even though I understood it after a few seconds of deliberation, it's not immediately clear that she's looking up at the strip title). What I don't get is what the point of her banter with the chief is. Like I said, it seems unrealistically stupid for somebody to so vehemently insult their captor without some sort of plan. Unless she does have a reason for working him up (which she doesn't appear to), I don't see how she could be so worked up that she would compromise all their safeties with such an obviously bad idea.

I haven't heard that boots phrase, but maybe that's my fault? I'm not really great with colloquialisms sometimes.
Leaking Pen - 2012/6/23
Xykeb, those things ARE being set up for later. Its been 3 strips. Also, Laldera is being worked up by the titles of the strips. It's a fourth wall gag.

as for the boots comment, apparently it's a local thing, but a comment I've heard from lots of people all my life, when someone starts schmoozing, is, Where are my boots, it's getting deep in here. I guess that was a failed gag.
Xykeb Zraliv - 2012/6/23
I'm gonna be honest, these last few pages have not be working for me at all. I know I've had some complaints before and I try to always provide some constructive criticism when I do, but I don't really know what to say here because it just seems like the comic overall is not coming together.

Well, okay, I will say this: these last few pages have seemed very out of focus to me. I've read them all over a few times and I really just have no idea what we're supposed to be taking away from all this. Is it important that that one goblin is really a kobold? Is it important that the chief recognized Laris? Is any of Laldera's taunting actually relevant, or is it a long joke? These things all stood out to me, but I could mention other things like whether it's important that Hilmor comes from nobility, or what Andil's boots have to do with anything.

The goblin/kobold character and the chief recognizing Laris are both dismissed way too quickly to feel particularly relevant, but at the same time I feel like there must be a point to them being mentioned. Is there? If so, they should have been discussed more, or at least brought up later when they become relevant. It feels like you're trying to bring up topics so you can use them later, but it all just feels very forced. As for Laldera, well...I don't know what to make of it, at all. Does she have a plan? Is she just throwing insults at the guy that has complete control over the situation with no reason other than that she doesn't like him? If it's supposed to just be a joke, I don't find it particularly funny.

I also feel like this whole arc is just screaming "filler" to me. I know you've said before, quite clearly, that it IS filler, but I really get this distinct sense that you're making it up as you go. Even if you're not, though, the pacing is awkward, and there's a bizarre segregation between the plot points that seem like they should be relevant but are dismissed immediately (Laris knowing Lana, the goblin being a kobold, etc.), and the ones that come out of nowhere and become relevant, even if they don't seem particularly important (this whole thing with the goblins, Tempts Fate's cameo where we didn't ever find out what he was doing or why he was doing it, maybe some other stuff).

I don't want to sound too harsh or complain-y or anything...it's just that I'm not enjoying this comic as much as I'd like to, and I think these are some of the reasons. I hope you aren't getting sick of me seemingly only having negative things to say, because I can tell you guys are trying and I want to see you improve. I'm just not seeing it happen to the extent that I'd like to, and it's compromising my ability to enjoy what I'm seeing here.

That's right, stuff her mouth. Nobody insult the Goku hairstyle and gets away with it.

...And she went straight from total success to being gagged and threatened with execution in the space of a round.

Hilarious, lads. Keep up the good work!
